PreCanSkate (Ages 3-5 - formerly Learn to Skate)

A 30 minute class designed specifically for those who are not yet in school, this class is for children ages 3-5 who have not had any significant time on skates. Designed to introduce children to the ice and help them become comfortable, this program teaches children the basics of how to get up when they fall down, how to move forward, basic backward movement and how to stop. Music, toys and games are used to help children feel ready to take the next step. All lessons are done in a group format, so children must be somewhat independent and not require one-on-one supervision. Once a participant has gained confidence and shown skill in gliding on each foot, stopping, and getting up from a down position, they can move on to the CanSkate program.

Skaters are to be dressed warmly for classes including waterproof mitts or gloves. Snowpants are also recommended. Approved CSA hockey or multi-sport helmets are mandatory and children will not be permitted on the ice without one. The club does not provide any equipment other than teaching aids.

CanSkate Stages 1 – 7

For those children ages 5 and up who can work independently within a group lesson. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, music and a wide variety of activities that create a fun environment and promote learning. Stages 1-3 work on the basics of skating in a fun environment utilizing music, circuits, games and toys. Stages 4-7 work on further developing their skills such as edges, crossovers, backwards skating and more. Progress reports and badges are awarded at the end of each session as skaters progress from one stage to the next.

CanSkate Stage 1 Pre-Teen/Teen

An option for the older skater who has little or no skating experience, this class teaches the basics of skating within a class of peers. Fundamentals such as getting up from a down position, forward and backward movement and basic gliding are taught in a group lesson using age appropriate games and circuits to promote learning and confidence. These skaters are welcome in any CanSkate 1 class if the times for the 10-16 year old class do not work with family schedules.
