MIXED (JUNIOR AND SENIOR) ICE

The Crowfoot Skating Club offers a Starskate Program for those skaters who are wishing to test and/or compete. The test program has three main disciplines, which are Skating Skills, Freeskate and Dance. Similar to last year, the ice times for this fall/winter have been labeled as Junior, Senior, or Mixed. For our Club, the split between Junior and Senior will be at the Junior Bronze Freeskate test level with the Junior Bronze skaters welcome on either ice times. Further to our senior ice times, please be aware that the following criteria must be met: Minimum Junior Bronze Freeskate (must be able to land Axels and/or Double Sow); this also includes any pickups.  Due to coaches’ availability we will consider allowing a skater to skate on opposite ice, but this must be approved by the other coaches and the executive. Please discuss with your coach early if you think you need to make use of this rule. All requests and subsequent approval are at the discretion of the executive. During the mixed sessions it will be the responsibility of all skaters to keep their heads up for the other skaters.

Skaters will pay for the ice cost at registration and then organize and pay for private lessons separately with the coach of their choice.

Prior to registration you must choose a coach and contact them to determine if they have space available and if so what days, type and number of lessons per week they can give your skater.

Program Description:

A 30 minute class designed specifically for those who are not yet in school, this class is for children ages 3-5 who have not had any significant time on skates. Designed to introduce children to the ice and help them become comfortable, this program teaches children the basics of how to get up when they fall down, how to move forward, basic backward movement and how to stop. Music, toys and games are used to help children feel ready to take the next step. All lessons are done in a group format, so children must be somewhat independent and not require one-on-one supervision. Children must be toilet trained. Once a participant has gained confidence and shown skill in gliding on each foot, stopping, and getting up from a down position they can move on to the CanSkate Program. Please refer to What Level is My Skater if you are uncertain which stage to choose for your skater.

Skaters are to be dressed warmly for classes including waterproof mitts or gloves. Snowpants are also recommended. Approved CSA hockey helmets are mandatory and children will not be permitted on the ice without one. The club does not provide any equipment other than teaching aids.

Program Description:

This year the Junior Development Program schedule is as follows:

- Thursday from 5:45-7:00 PM RRA (May) and 5:45-7:00 PM (June) Crowfoot Arena

- Sunday 4:45-6:00 PM Rocky Ridge Enerplus Arena

No Class on Victoria Day Weekend.

The Junior Development Program is a unique bridging program that allows skaters to learn about figure skating and become comfortable with using the entire ice surface before entering into private/semi-private lessons with a coach. It is suited for skaters who have successfully completed CanSkate Stage 3, 4, 5 and 6. The Junior Development Program offers group lesson instruction that includes all ice and coaching fees. This program involves two on ice sessions a week. It focuses on the fundamental skills of skating with the goal of building strength and confidence on the ice. Skaters are taught in a small group by a nationally certified professional coach in a fun and positive environment.

What Will I Learn in Junior Development?

In Junior Development we will work largely on the fundamental skills of figure skating. We will work on gaining greater balance and strength through various activities and will improve our forwards and backwards crossovers, stroking and glides. Skaters will learn the primary figure skating jumps and spins that they will continue to use throughout their skating career, as well as field movements like spirals and drags. Upon completion of the Junior Development Program (which may take 1-2 sessions), skaters may be invited to attend the STARSkate program.

Levels 1 to 3 focus on the fundamentals of skating, Levels 4 to 6 place additional focus on the acquisition of efficient technique, speed, agility, technical aspects of stride and acceleration and skating with the puck/ring. Skaters are evaluated on skill level and are timed as they perform a test involving skills in a course-like pattern. The skater receives a mark combining their skill performance plus test time. CanPowerSkate is the only nationally regulated power skating program in Canada. It was developed by a team of hockey, figure skating and ringette experts to teach the fundamentals of power skating in a progressive and sequential manner.  The CanPowerSkate program consists of skills divided into six levels, arranged in progressions gradually increasing in complexity. This determines whether the skater receives a Bronze, Silver or Gold award bar for that Level.
